River Oaks

River Oaks is a mostly residential neighborhood in the western part of Central Houston, Texas. Notable locations bordering the neighborhood include Memorial Park to the north, Upper Kirby to the south, Uptown to the west, and Shepherd Drive to the east. Its strategic location provides convenient access to roads such as Westheimer Road, Kirby Drive, and San Felipe Street.

River Oaks was founded by the brothers’ Will and Mike Hogg together with Hugh Potter. They first purchased and developed the area around the River Oaks Country Club Estates in 1923 and later acquired the land on all its sides. Thus, the development of River Oaks began. From 1926 to 1947, that additional 1,100 acres of land, known as River Oaks, joined the River Oaks Country Club Estates. The founders’ meticulous planning, unyielding deed restrictions, and building codes established River Oaks as Houston’s posh neighborhood.

River Oaks has a share of stately mansions, grand Victorian homes, a collection of single-family homes, condos, and townhomes. The architectural style is a mixture of Contemporary, French, Mediterranean, Spanish, Traditional, and other designs such as American Colonial and English Tudor. Properties have a median sale price of over $2,500,000 for a single-family house, $500,000 for townhomes, and $200,000 to $5,000,000 for condos. River Oaks homes have 4- to 5-bedroom floor plans with 3,000 to more than 10,000 square feet lot area. The more expensive ones feature 6 to 9 bedrooms, with floor area ranging between 12,000 to 16,000 square feet. The townhomes and condos showcase 2 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 3 full baths—living spaces measure between 1,000 to more than 2,500 square feet.
